My directoral debut. There was a critical mass in 2006 of people telling me I should direct a short film. I thought it could be a good idea, as I'm known as a bit of control freak, or at least very specific as to how I would like my work produced. Separately my good friend Rebecca Hall had asked me, whilst bored between jobs, to assign her some little writing assignments. As I had been doing the Eyes Swoll short stories at the time, I told her to do something similar. She did, and is a tremendous writer in her own right. And the first story she sent me was called Maggie. I read it and thought if I ever want to do a short it would be this. The challenge of the short story is that it is almost entirely cerebral, about a character making a decision to stay or go. So in turning out a fifteen page script out of a two page story, I had to come up with a way to make this very subtle decision read in action. I hope I have. I am very proud of the film.
